The venue for this exciting natural fermentation Indigo workshop led by dyer and embroiderer, Vivien Prideaux, is the lovingly restored 14th century chateau Etres Aux Anges, offering a practical and comfortable venue, situated on top of a hill with 360 degree views of the most stunning countryside in the beautiful region of Lot & Garonne in the province of Aquitaine, France.
Everyone is welcome on this residential course from absolute beginners to those with much more experience; but only those wishing to work with an open mind and who enjoy learning through discovery will benefit from this opportunity of an intense period of working in a creative environment where personal development and a feeling of wellbeing can be achieved.
Vivien, an experienced tutor, who has worked with and studied natural indigo all over the world, will share her knowledge in a structured way, starting with the preparation of natural materials for dyeing, sample methods of SHIBORI (the inventive art of Japanese shaped resist dyeing), the preparation and long term maintenance of both a “bio” and “zinc lime” Indigo fermentation vats. These vats have no unpleasant smell or caustic fumes and yield rich, deep shades of blue and can be maintained ready for use for many months and are ecologically green.
Each student will receive a basic “work bag’ containing one metre each of silk, cotton, linen and sewing materials; all other materials and equipment will also be provided. Students are requested to bring their own sketch books and drawing materials.
Chateau Etres Aux Anges, is located 2 kilometres from the medieval town of Duras with its restaurants, bars, market and grand chateau. It is 35 minutes from Bergerac airport and 1 hour 15 minutes from Bordeaux airport. Transfers from both airports can be arranged. 3hrs from Paris by train

* Accommodation in spacious twin oak beamed bedrooms – all ensuite, limited single rooms (supplement £280.00)
* 3 snug rooms for quiet relaxation
* A beautiful dining room with log fire serving delicious home cooked meals- using fantastic regional foods. Continental breakfast, lunch and dinner; wine with lunch & dinner, or soft drinks; and refreshments through out the day are included in the fee.
The dining room opens on to a large terrace to allow alfresco eating, drinking and socialising or reflecting on the amazing sunsets.

The property is surrounded by 25 acres of garden, woods and pastures.

Workshop Details
Aims of the workshop are for the student to acquire a competent understanding and the skills of Indigo dyeing with special reference and hands on experience of natural fermentation vats and to explore various methods of resist fabric preparation to include, shibori and paste resist and textured fabrics.
Through demonstrations, samples, group discussions, one to one tutorials and lectures and in groups of 3/4 to make and maintain an indigo vat for their use during the workshop.
All materials including a ‘Workbag’ containing one meter of each silk, cotton and linen fabrics, equipment and dyes are included in the course fee. Please bring your own sketch book and drawing materials. In addition fabrics, natural indigo, samples, post cards and Vivien’s work will be for sale.

Those with pre arranged transfers will be collected at their time of arrival and brought to the Chateau.

20.00 Introduction to the week’s activities, setting goals, personal achievement, and ‘house keeping’. Followed by ‘Around the World with 80 Dyes’, a slide lecture about natural dyes and in particular indigo followed by questions and answer session.

Colour is personal – and should be so, but with some knowledge of its behaviour, more exciting schemes may be devised and errors avoided. This structured, practical workshop exploring the theory of colour will provide an exciting opportunity for participants of all levels of abilities to experiment with colour, leading to a sound knowledge and providing a solid foundation upon which future developments can be made.
FANTASY FABRICS
2 days
Fabrics can be evocative of many moods- gossamer soft and delicate, rich and glowing, demure and vibrant. This workshop exploring the Japanese techniques of SHIBORI – the inventive art of Japanese shaped resist dyeing, will give the student time to acquire new dyeing skills, and an opportunity to be creative and inventive with these new skills. Combine these techniques with fibre reactive dyes and the resulting textures and colours can create exquisite and fanciful fabrics for many moods.
JAPANESE STENCILLING
1 or 2 days
This practical workshop explores methods of decorating fabric with colour through Japanese stencilling techniques and which dyes to use. It is a must for anyone wishing to produce unique and professional fabrics for clothing, interiors and embroidery. Whilst this workshop is suitable for beginners, students with some previous printing knowledge will have the chance to build on their experience.
‘ALL RUCKED UP!’
1 or 2 days
This is a fun workshop for students of all levels who are interested in texture and fabric manipulation that can be achieved by using a smocking machine. Add the ‘rucked’ fabric to fibre reactive dyes and sample the stunning patterns and textures that are produced, to enjoy just as they are or by cutting and rearranging as the base of your textile work.

A workshop exploring colour and design using fibre reactive dye. This Introductory Course is intended to provide an exciting and stimulating opportunity for participants of all levels of abilities to explore and experiment with colour and the possible effects on fabric, leading to a sound knowledge of colour and design.

Four or five day workshop
This workshop will be taught in a structured way starting with simple methods of SHIBORI (the inventive art of Japanese shaped resist dyeing) and preparation of an Indigo vat. The zinc lime vat has no unpleasant smell or caustic fumes and yields rich, deep shades of blue and can be maintained ready for use for many months. Students will then design and stitch a traditional Kimono prior to dyeing.
